El Salvador Election

Yesterday we went to the El Salvador market in the centre, locals were shocked to hear we went there as only one of them had ever been there as they all feared danger in the market, it was fine though. Two ladies were suprised at how white i was and touched my skin as they walked by...weird but funny. çlast night went to barbeque in someones house and the meat was far nicer than at home. Today the day of the elections had loads of pick up trucks loaded with people in the back and we grabbed a couple of free pick up trucks from the FMLN and made our way down to the centre voting station, pretty crazy big and the amount of FMLN support was crazy. FMLN are in all red and its like as if a huge football game is about to kick off. It had a carnival feel to it and election looked well organised.

The candiate for president from the Arena side was there to vote and crowd went crazy.

Later in afternoon we saw a truck load of police getting ready for this evening. We decided to head back to see whats happening, the police created a barrier to protect Arena supporters and the FMLN supporters had a field day, it was great to see them win, "first leader who is not ex-guerilla and is true representative of the people." There was no fighting which was great to see. They marched one of the main Arena streest all night long, chanting for their neew president and telling us "we are part of their history", "its history in the making."

  1. LOL. For the man not interested in politics, that was just hilarious. I fell around laughing. Ciaran Carroll on a truck on the way to voting and the count centre - that will keep a smile on my face for weeks.

Knew you would go find trouble for yourself when travelling - I suppose now that you can't thump me anymore, you needed to take your aggression out on someone :-)

    Take care kid.
